In 1990, a group of members recognized the need to form a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in the Stone Mountain/Lithonia area. During the spring of 1991, Brenda Dalton identified seventeen interested members who lived in southeastern DeKalb County and who were motivated to charter an Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter. Brenda Dalton took the initiative to obtain information about the process for chartering a chapter. Nine members, Brenda Dalton, Sharon Cooper, Ora Griggs, Laura Hurt, Dawn M. Jones, Debra Meadows, Amelia Quarles, Charlotte Robinson and Oneitta Young began the chartering process. Shortly thereafter, other members joined the group and in October 1991, an interest group was formed. The name chosen for the interest group was the Cultured Pearls.
The Cultured Pearls became Tau Pi Omega Chapter on January 23, 1993. There were thirty charter members: Cynthia Beasley, Patricia Brown, Patricia Weathers-Brownlee, Dontanette Cohill, Sharon Cooper, Brenda Dalton, Monique Davis, Arlena Edmonds, Sharon Friday, Gwendolyn Russell Green, Johnetta Hardy, Angela Hurt, Laura Hurt, Diane Johnson (Reynolds), Stacey Key, Debra Meadows, Marie McKenzie (Morgan), Brenda Mitchell, Charline Pinnix, Amelia Quarles, Tracey Reed, Paula Roberts, Charlotte Robinson, Doretha Ross, Paula Saunders, Rachanice Tate, Theopia Tate, Joyce Taylor, Rita Wyatt and Oneitta Young (Lawrence).
Tau Pi Omega Chapter has had eight presidents. The chapter presidents are shown in chronological order: Brenda Dalton, Stacy Key, Diane Johnson Reynolds, Gwendolyn Russell Green, Alfra Dean Fisher, Doretha Redd Ross, Angela M. Friall and Theresa M. House is the eighth and current president.
Throughout our nineteen years of service, Tau Pi Omega members have collaborated with other agencies and organizations to make a positive difference in the lives of the residents of DeKalb county. We continue to be committed to the ideals of our sisterhood, “To make Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated supreme in service to all mankind!”
The Council for Community Enrichment, Incorporated (CCE, Inc., a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization, is the foundation and fundraising entity for the Tau Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
The CCE, Inc. was organized in 2004 for educational and charitable purposes to enhance the lives of the residents of DeKalb County, Georgia, in the Stone Mountain and Lithonia communities, specifically.
